Lafarge Quarry in Lockport, NY - October 29,

This field trip was excellent, even
though it was by invitation only. It would've been better if more
people were able to come. The area that they allowed us into was a
fresh blast zone, and had only been moved around once to pile up the
piles of rocks more neatly. I say fresh blast meaning that no one
(not even the quarry people) had picked through it yet. We found
lots of excellent specimens, much more than what you find in a day at
Walworth and Penfield. Most of the minerals found were nice bright
yellow dog tooth calcite crystals, excellent water clear selenite
crystals, and lots of nice pink dolomite crystals. You knew that
you had a very nice collecting specimen if you had all three of those
one one piece. It is rare to find sphalerite and fluorite in this
quarry, but if you do, then you know you have found a gem. It was
a great day...not too cool, and nice and sunny. Unfortunately, out
of the 20 people that were there, only one person had a camera, so I
will just post a satellite view of the quarry for now. If you have
any other pictures, please email them to me.
