Thursday March 7th – 7:30pm – Dr. Howard Heitner “Fluorescence, History, Mechanism and Applications”. A lot of minerals fluoresce and that has made fluorescence an exciting part of mineral collecting and prospecting. The talk will cover some of the history of mineral fluorescence and the ultraviolet sources available to today’s collector. Howard has recently joined the lapidary society to work on cutting and polishing some of the materials he has collected over the years. He has been a mineral collector for over 60 years, and has been a field collector, purchaser of specimens and collections. He is interested in the historical aspects of mineralogy and has written several articles. He has a doctorate in chemistry and spent most of his career, about 30 years, doing research developing chemicals used in the mining industry. Feel free to bring any fluorescent minerals you have for show and tell.
